Abstract

294,157. Whiting, B. April 19, 1927. Regulation, automatic.-In a process wherein metal strips or bands are heated electrically prior to rolling, the current supply is controlled by the degree of incandescence of the band. A contact member 10 sliding on a race 9 is connected by chains 8 passing over sprocket wheels 7<a>, 7b, to the cores 6<a>, 6<b> of electromagnets 5<a>, 5b, in parallel circuits 4<a>, 4b fitted with an adjustable resistance 11 and a selenium cell 1 respectively. Light from the heated band 3 is projected on to the cell by means of a lens 2. The contact 10 varies the number of turns in the secondary of the supply transformer or varies the resistance of the heating circuit. The regulation may be effected through relays.
