Materials for making gas.-Coal, lignite, shale, peat, or like carbonaceous material is heated at 70-300‹ C. with an alkaline solution of sodium, potassium, or ammonium oleate and aluminium sulphate is added in order to solidify the oleate. The solid material is separated and distilled with water or steam in a retort to make gas, or in . porous condition can be burnt. The liquid products may be subjected to fractional distillation.
