Abstract

291,497. Hemmingsen, T. V. Feb. 26, 1927. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-To ensure an adequate supply of fuel during the initial injection stage the first portion of the fuel is delivered by a pump or its equivalent the remainder is injected by the action of compressed air. The injector shown in Fig. 1 has an admission valve 6 with a spindle 7 carrying a sleeve 8 which serves as a plunger to force oil from an annulus 10 through passages 21, 23 and directly into the cylinder immediately the valve opens. During the period when the valve is seated, fuel is deposited in a pocket 29 by a pump 17 which delivers through passages 18, 21 and an annulus 24 opening into the pocket; the fuel is subsequently conveyed to the cylinder by compressed air admitted through a port 12 and traversing a gap 13 and passage 16, 30 at the spraying point. The injector shown in Fig. 1 is for use in a horizontal position and a modified construction is described for use in a vertical position. The pump 17 may be timed to deliver the initial portion of the fuel which enters the cylinder directly, and also the portion which is deposited in the injector: in this modification the pumping action of the plunger 8 is dispensed with. Also, the fuel injected initially may be supplied by an independent pump or by the pump 17 working in conjunction with a pipe line containing an accumulator or the equivalent.
