Abstract

373,443. Oil engines. RUTZEBECK, A. V., 310, S÷dert÷rnsvõgen, Enskede, near Stockholm. June 12, 1931, No. 17128. [Class 7 (iii).] In a multi-cylinder engine liquid fuel and air are supplied to an injector 13, Fig. 4, the fuel being delivered by a diaphragm pump, Fig. 2, which is actuated by the compression or explosion pressure in a cylinder other than that into which the fuel is being injected, the injection air blast being also transmitted from the pump-actuating cylinder. In the engine shown in Fig. 1 the main air supply is admitted by a branched pipe 10 through valves 9 and fuel is supplied by a branched pipe 12 to pumps 15I-IV these having fuel and air delivery pipes 14I-IV and 17I-IV respectively connected to the injectors 13I-IV of the cylinders which they supply. The firing sequence is I, II, IV, III, and the injectors and pumps are so connected that during portions of the compression and/or firing strokes of, for instance, cylinder I fuel is injected by pump 151 to the injector 13II of cylinder II during the suction and/or compression strokes of the latter; fuel is drawn into the pump 15II during the suction stroke of cylinder II in readiness for supplying injector 13IV when the charge in cylinder II is fired by an igniter 16. Atmospheric air is also drawn into the branch 18I-IV of each pump, during the suction strokes of the associated cylinders, through a non-return valve 37, Fig. 7, and is discharged during the compression stroke by a free piston 42 through a non-return valve 39 to the associated injector through pipes 17I-IV; the piston 42 and buffer spring 43 may be omitted, in which case some of the products of combustion may mix with the injection air. The injection nozzle, Fig. 4, has radially converging discharge orifices 32 and a lateral orifice 33 which directs a stream of fuel towards the igniter 16. A ball valve 31 closes the feed passage 28 of the injector when the cylinder pressure exceeds the injection pressure. The injectors may be located in the air pipes 10 instead of in the cylinder heads. The diaphragm 19 of the fuel pump, Fig. 2, contacts with a member 23 which serves to absorb the oscillations of the diaphragm. The quantity of fuel supplied by the pump may be adjusted by a screwed stop 24 which limits the delivery stroke of the member 23.
