Abstract

Cigarette-making machines.-The. tobacco discharged from the carding roller a into the channel 3 of a machine of the continuous-rod type is subdivided by making the inclined back 2 of the shoot c in several sections of differing width, the largest section being at the middle. By this means the advancing band 4 receives successively quantities which correspond to the circular or oval cross-section of the completed rod. The diameter of the rod as thus formed is reduced by passage through channels 6, 11, 17 of decreasing diameter, each channel being partly conical and partly cylindrical. The belts 4, 10 moving within the channels 6, 11 compress the rod from opposite sides. Connecting members 7, 12 are grooved on one surface to guide the tobacco rod, but wedge-shaped on the other to batten out the bands 4, 10. Each channel is in two portions, a movable half, e.g. 6<b>, being hinged to a fixed half 6a by a pin 18. A doubly-toothed spring- pressed pawl 24 engages a projection 21 onthe part 6<b> and also a ratchet wheel 33. Abnormal working of the rod mechanism opens the channel halves, thus releasing the wheel 33, the rotation of which operates a signalling or stopping device. The cigarette paper is led in between the tobacco and the guide 17.
