Apparatus for making filaments. - Deposits forming at the mouths of the spinning frames used for the manufacture of cuprammonia silk are removed during the idle periods of the plant for instance, while the bobbins are being doffed by bringing below the mouth of the funnel a trough 6 to which is supplied liquid for dissolving the deposits, and at the same time operating the water-supply and vacuum cocks 4, 5, so that the supply of water is cut off and the liquid from the trough is drawn into the funnel by the opening of the vacuum cock 5 ; the cocks are connected so as to be actuated in unison. The supporting arm 8, Fig. 1, of the trough may serve for the supply of liquid, the arrangement being such that movement of the trough to the inoperative position cuts off the supply of liquid. Alternatively, the trough may carry a guide rod 12, Fig. 3, arranged so that the thread is deflected laterally when the trough is raised, liquid being then supplied by opening the cock 13 which may be connected to the cocks 4. 5.
