289,766. Koppers Co., (Assignees of Becker, J.). April 30, 1927, [Convention date]. Density separators.-A tar separator comprises means for causing the gas to whirl so as to deposit globular tar. A shell 1 having a gas inlet 5 and outlet 6 is divided by a partition 7 into upper and lower compartments communicating by a central conduit 12, which has a number of vanes 43 imparting a whirling motion to the gas passing to the lower chamber in which a radiator 46 or steam coil is arranged round a rectangular baffle 45. Gas passes through opening 47 beneath the radiator to the outlet 6. Tar impinging on the conduit walls collects in a channel 48 having a steam coil 51 and drain 49.
