Abstract

535,484. Treating gases with liquids and steam. FAY, H. Nov. 28, 1939, No. 30937. [Class 55 (ii)] An apparatus for cleaning and cooling gases from engine exhausts and smoke flues, and for silencing exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, and recovering acids or other deposits, comprises an inlet chamber 5 separated by walls 7, 8 from an outlet chamber 6 across which screens of water, are cascaded. The gas to be cleaned enters through a flanged branch 3 and passes upwardly into chamber 5, a cavity 5a at the top of the chamber forming a cushioning space where pulsations are absorbed. Water (or steam) from a perforated pipe 10 is directed on to a curved wall 11 and across the chamber to baffles 12, and 14, finally escaping through an outlet 15 to a separator 17 in which impurities are recovered. With flap valves 21 open, the heavier impurities collect at the bottom of the separator from which they are discharged on opening a door 27 fitted with a draw off cock 28 and filter 29. The lighter particles collect in the upper part and are discharged after the heavier ones. The water passing to outlet 20 may be treated for recovery of valuable materials. In a modification, the gases enter a central pipe and pass through similarly arranged water cascades in an annular chamber.
