Abstract

1426491 Exhaust gas cleaner K AOI 22 Aug 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 39848/73 Heading BIT [Also in Division F1] An exhaust gas purifying cylinder 1 includes a plurality of treatment stages each comprising three chambers 4a, 9a, 11a, 4b, 9b, 11b and 4c, 9c, 11c with perforated plates 5a, 5b, 5c separating the first two chambers of each stage. The volumes of the chambers of each stage decrease from stage to stage in the gas flow direction and the size of the perforations 5h 1 , 5h 2 , 5h 3 in the plates 5 also correspondingly decrease from stage to stage. Adiabatic expansion occurs at the plates 5 and depending upon the gas flow rate is sufficient at one or more of the plates to cause sufficient cooling of the gas for condensation of vapour therein to occur in the associated chamber 11. The chambers 9 are defined by perforated walls 6, 8 and contain heat resistant fibrous material which traps carbon particles and lead. A tube 7 extending centrally through the cylinder 1 provides a path for the flow of cooling air caused by a fan or movement of a vehicle on which the cylinder is mounted. Particles in the gas are collected in a chamber 3 upstream of the cylinder 1 as a result of the swirling flow in the chamiber between the inlet pipe 2 and the chamber outlet. Liquid is drained from the chambers 9 through holes 1h, chamber 15 and pipes 16 to a tank 14. The number of perforations in the plates 5 may decrease from stage to stage in the gas flow direction.
