Density separators.-A centrifugal separator or cleaner for steam or other gases has a helical baffle arranged in the path of the medium; a helical slot is provided in the wall of the cylinder adjacent the baffle for the passage of impurities. The casing 1, Fig. 1, contains an inner cylinder 2 having a slot 3 and baffle 6. A skirt 4 is attached to the upper edge of the slot or is formed on the edge by spinning. Steam enters the cylinder 2 at the top and passes down the helix 6, any suspended water and foreign matters are deposited or are forced out by centrifugal force through the slot 3 to the space 5 between the cylinders 1, 2 from whence they pass to the chamber 7 and discharge pipe 8. The clean steam passes out of the bottom of the cylinder 1. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the outlet is' at the same end as the inlet. The steam outlet is formed by a central pipe 9 and the lower end of the cylinder 2 is closed by a dished plate 10. The lower end of the casing 1 is closed, except for the water discharge outlet 12. In another modification the apparatus is combined with a separator of the baffle type through which the steam passes before it reaches the centrifugal separator. In another modification a central spraying pipe 28, Fig. 6, is provided, and water is fed on to. the baffle 6 or the wall of the drum 2 to wash the impurities downwards. Combinations of separators may be used and their spraying pipes supplied from a common source.
