Clutches, friction.-In friction clutches, the lateral expansion of one or more longitudinally compressible lengths of roller chain or the like is utilized to cause engagement of driving and driven surfaces. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a pulley &c. P, loosely mounted on a driving sleeve S<1>, is formed with an annular recess in which are located split rings P', P<2> between which are arranged lengths C of roller chains accommodated in recesses in a pair of loose rings C<1>, C<2>, the ends of the recesses serving as thrust surfaces. At one point the rings C<1>, C<2> are divided or recessed to accommodate a cam B carried by a spindle B<3> mounted in a flange S<3> on the driving sleeve and adapted to be rotated by means of a slidable cone member D acting upon an arm B<4> adjustably secured to the spindle. When turned, the cam acts through wearing blocks C<6> to thrust the rings C<1>, C<2> in opposite directions causing the chains to press the split rings P<1>, P<2> apart into gripping engagement with the annular surfaces of the pulley recess. The cam B may be arranged in a bracket or bearing member F secured to the face of the flange S<3>. The flange may be provided with a guard rim S<2> and a counter-balancing segment S<4>. The chain rollers may run on raised tracks on the split rings P<1>, P<2>. The invention may be applied to plate or disc clutches.
