Cigarette - making machines. - In cutting mechanism for machines of the continuous-rod type, the cutter and ledger plate are reciprocated by an adjustable eccentric 4 which is mounted on the driving shaft 5 and actuates a carriage 6 to which the ledger plate is attached by rods 9, 9<a>. The cutter shaft 7 is also reciprocated by the carriage 6 and is rotated through skewwheels 14, a shaft 15, and coupling members 18. 19, 20. The end of the shaft 15 is reduced and enters a socket in the end of the shaft 7, acting thus to keep the shafts in alignment and also, by reason of the enclosed air, serving as a cushioning device. One of the rods 9a works within a bracket 12 in the oil-tight casing.
