Abstract

287,774. Seiliger, M. Aug. 17 1927. Regulating delivery bye-passes; stroke, varying. -In order to vary the torque inversely as the speed in engines using liquid-fuel injection, the air and fuel supplies per unit time are maintained constant, so that more air and fuel are supplied per cycle as the speed decreases, and in addition for speeds below half-maximum, the working of the engine is changed over from the four-stroke to the two-stroke cycle. The fuel pump m may be driven by a separate motor to maintain the supply constant, or it may be driven by the engine and have its stroke varied by an adjustable cam y, Fig. 3. A governor n, by opening a bye-pass valve o in the fuel supply, limits the maximum speed at which the engine may run, and the amount of this speed is varied by adjusting the belt and cone-pulley drive q, r for the governor. The stroke of the engine-driven fuel pump x, Fig. 3. is varied so as to maintain a constant supply per unit time by hand or governor adjustment axially of the cam y, which is formed with an incline y<1> for increasing the stroke as the speed decreases with four-stroke working, and with two opposed inclines y<2>, y<3> for increasing the stroke during two-stroke working.
