Abstract

Class 7(3) [Also in Groups XXVI and XXVIII] The speed at which a vane-type rotary pump 11 supplying fuel to the reservoir of a fuel injection pump, is driven by an electric motor 12 is varied to vary the output of the supply pump. The pump 11 is preferably similar to that described in Specifications 591,554 or 605,140 [both in Group XXVI] and its speed may be varied either by varying the speed of the electric motor 12 or by the use of a variable speed transmission means in the drive between the pump and motor. As shown, the speed of the motor 12 is controlled by a potentiometer 15; alternatively the means for controlling the motor speed may be of the kind employing the Ward-Leonard principle. In further embodiments the pump speed is controlled by means of a multispeed-variable ratio gear box or by means of a belt drive with an adjustable pulley.
