Surface markings. - A traffic-direction mark or sign adapted to be inserted or built in a roadway with its upper surface flush with the adjacent surface comprises a plurality of two-part blocks or slabs a, b, the lower part of the block being formed with a transverse channel which is whitened or formed as a reflecting-surface and the upper removable part being formed of transparent or translucent material and supported by shoulders formed on the lower part of the block, a resilient material being preferably interposed between the contacting surfaces, and with or without means for flooding the transverse channel with artificial light. The block a of glass forms the cover of a box-like casing b or channel provided with a reflecting- surface and built within and below the surface of the road. A layer c of india-rubber, cork, or other material may be interposed between the block a and channel band mav be cemented thereto. The channel b may be flooded with artificial light, which may be directed by reflectors to illuminate the block a. The surfaces of the blocks a may be ribbed, corrugated, or of lenticular formation as shown in Fig. 7. Two or more lamps d of differing colour, such as electric-discharge tubes filled with neon, carbon dioxide, or other gas, according to the colour of the light desired, may be used. The inner surfaces of the blocks mav be partly obscured or bear letters &c. which will be visible from above, or alternate blocks may be made of non-transparent material, or of a differently coloured glass, so as to provide a ready means for differentiating the signals to be conveyed to the traffic. Each block or slab may be formed as a separate letter or sign, or a plurality of the blocks may be arranged to form letters.
