[Class 20 (iii).] In road surface markings of the type comprising a transparent or translucent slab located over illuminating means, the slab or its supporting member is partly or wholly of circular form and is provided with a threaded portion whereby it may be screwed to an illumination supporting container. Fig. 1 shows a transparent slab T mounted within a frame C which is threaded at C<1> to screw into a tubular metal or earthenware lamp container B, a keyhole K and locking pin Q being provided if necessary, and the whole being embedded in the road surface A. The slab T may have a curved or ribbed upper surface, and may incorporate a grating if desired. Washers of pitch, wax, rubber, &c., may be inserted between the members T, C, and B, undercut grooves being provided if necessary to ensure complete sealing, and the edge of the slab T may be protected by an upstanding rubber washer surrounding it. The units may themselves be mounted in the road surface by means of pitch or like filling material, and may be arranged at spaced intervals according to Specification 346,335. According to a modification, a number of white or coloured translucent circular plugs are screwed into a single baseplate to form a word, lamps located beneath being lighted at will. Alternatively, letters or words may be formed on a single large translucent slab.
