Abstract
365,480. Electric discharge tube signs. JAMES, G. S., 6430, North Mozart Street, Chicago, U.S.A. June 19, 1931, No. 17805. Convention date, Oct. 18, 1930. [Class 3 (ii).] In a sign of the type comprising a glass plate illuminated through its edge, the illuminating means comprises an electric discharge tube located in a groove formed in one face of the plate. As shown, two plates 11 are provided with adjacent semicircular grooves 12 in which the discharge tube 13, which forms a rectangular frame round the legend, is accommodated. The grooves are preferably formed by sand-blasting, so that their inner surfaces are mat and the light reaching the eye directly is diffused. The legend 15, which may be provided with a coloured felt background 16, may be formed by sand-blasting, by sticking ground glass characters to the rear of the plate 11, or by writing on it with a china pencil. The tube 12 terminates in a hollow base which contains the transformer and any other necessary equipment, and is provided at its sides with upright extensions 17 within which are arranged channel members 18 for clamping the plates together. Clamping members are also provided at the top of the plates and these are held in position by a wire 20 which is threaded through them and is passed round plates and secured in the hollow base.
