Toothed gearing. - End thrust may be prevented in bevel gearing with radial, oblique, or helical teeth by the use of one or more rings c, e secured to one wheel a or to its shaft and bearing against the other b of the pair or against a cap c' secured thereto. Preferably the rings engage the wheel b only in the vicinity of the pitch circles at the tooth ends to reduce friction, although they may engage elsewhere, for example at the root circles as is shown in the case of the ring e. The engaging surfaces may be respectively conical and spherical, or may be spherical only, in which case they are preferably of different curvatures. The gearing may comprise more than two bevel wheels, in which case additional rings are provided. Where end thrust in one wheel only is to be prevented, one ring only may be employed.
