Toothed wheels; racks. - Toothed wheel and rack gearing of the spur, bevel, or skew type has single or double helical or like inclined teeth and mating concave and convex tooth profiles of substantially circular arc form in planes normal to the tooth lengths or to the pitch line. As shown in Fig. 1, the working faces of the teeth of one wheel lie entirely outside and those of the other entirely inside the pitch line and the profile centres preferably lie on the pitch circles. The profile radii may vary from onehalf to one and a-half times the normal circumferential pitch of the teeth. Particularly when the gear wheel centres are liable to change, the profile radii may differ in the two wheels. The concave tooth faces would be produced by moving a sphere transversely to the gears with its centre passing along the pitch line at a uniform or varying speed, while the gears are rotated at their gearing speeds. In practice, the sphere is represented by a tool with a circular cutting profile, and the convex teeth are similarly cut; hobbing, milling with disc or end mills, grinding, shaping, or planing may be employed.
