Abstract

287,314. Winter, G., and Johnson, C. March 10, 1927. Stuffing-box jonts; joints with longitudinal pressure and with yielding outer part compressed. -The end of a pipe union 4 is provided with a central spigot 7 adapted to enter the flared end 13 of a pipe G, a recess 8 for the reception of said flared end, and a peripheral flange 9, and fluid-tightness is secured between the union and pipe by a packing ring 11 of lead, aluminium, &c. which is compressed against both the exterior of the pipe and the peripheral flange of a coupling nut 5. In a modification the coupling nut is bevelled to press against the flared end of the pipe while the packing ring bears only against the flange 9.
