Magneto-electric machines; commutators. - A commutator for dynamo-electric machines having a rotating flywheel magnet system external to a stationary armature., rotates with the flywheel and comprises one or more conducting segments co-operating with stationary brushes, one of which is connected to the armature, winding and another to a terminal of the consumption circulit. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the flywheel comprises a permanent magnet 1 and the commutator 8 has a single conducting segment. One of the two axially aligned brushes 9 is connected to the generating winding 6 and the, other (not shown) is connected to a battery 12 preferably through an automatic switch 11. With this type of commutator, part only of the positive or negative portion of the current cycle is utilized. In the modification shown in Fig. 3. the commutator comprises two insulated rings 18, 19 which overlap each other over one half their circumference and four brushes are used. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, semicircular earthed conducting insets 18, 20 are let into and insulated from a conducting ring 19, and three brushes are used. With the two last described forms of commutator, the positive and the negative portions of the alternating current cycle are utilized.
