Abstract

286,478. Grove, J. March 29, 1927. Wrenches with chuck-like grip.-In a box spanner of the kind described in Specification 230,161 comprising an outer tube and a split inner tube or box socket movable outwardly in relation to the cuter tube so as to be contracted by conical portions on the two tubes, the outward movement of the inner tube is effected by a cam or wedge member. The split tube 3 with jaws 4 shaped to engage a nut has a tapered extremity 10 to engage a concave portion 2 on the outer tube 1. Holes 5, 6 are provided in the outer and inner tubes to take an operating bar 7 which is of cylindrical shape but cut away to form a flat 8 tapering towards the end to constitute a wedge. The holes 6 in the inner tube have a flat bottom 9 to engage the flat on the bar. The jaws 4 are contracted to grip the nut by pushing in the bar 7 and when the nut is being turned the pressure on the handle portion 11 also tends to rotate the bar and automatically tighten the jaws on the nut.
