Be it known that I, RONELLO S. SPAULD- ING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shawlnut, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, and has for its object to provide an improved wrench which is especially designed for applying and removing the hub-attaching nuts of vehicles.
It is furthermore designed to provide improved means for adjusting the jaws of the wrench to fit nuts of different sizes and also to provide for the convenient and rapid operation of the device to set and remove nuts without removing the wrench for a new grip, as in the operation of an ordinary wrench.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a 1011- gitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the adjustable jaws.
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the body of the wrench, which is in the form of a substantially-rectangular sleeve having a circular and longitudinal bore, which is open at its opposite ends.
Fitted loosely in the bore of the body or sleeve 1 is a rod 2, which projects outwardly at opposite ends of the sleeve and has its projecting portions provided with oppositelydisposed screw-threads. The intermediate portion of the rod is cylindrical in shape to turn within the sleeve, and the screw-threaded portions extend for equal distances beyond the respective ends of the sleeve and have their outer extremities made angular, so as to fixedly support the handles 3. It will be understood that the rod is inserted into the sleeve before the handles are placed thereon, and prior to the connection of the latter the rings or washers 4 are fitted upon the oppo' site end portions of the rod and fixed thereto, so as to form annular stop-shoulders to prevent longitudinal movement of the sleeve upon the rod.
Slidably mounted upon the opposite ends of the sleeve are the substantially L-shaped wrench-jaws 5, which are duplicates in construction and mounting and are designed to cooperate to clamp upon a nut. The arm or branch 6 is provided with a socket or is hollow and open at its inner end to receive the angular end of the sleeve, the socket being angular to prevent rotation of the jaw upon the sleeve. The outer end of the socket is closed by means of a wall 7, which is provided with a screw-threaded opening to receive the adjacent screw-threaded portion of the rod, so that by turning the latter the jaw may be fed or adjusted longitudinally in oppOsite directions upon the sleeve. The other arm or branch 8 is provided with a longitudinally-disposed and substantially V-shaped groove 9 upon its inner face to receive one of the corners of a nut. V
Projecting laterally outward from the sleeve is an intermediate stem or spindle 10, which is opposite the jaws and is braced by means of the opposite webs 11. A suitable handle 12 is mounted to turn upon the stem or spindle and is held against accidental displacement therefrom by means of a pin 13, driven laterally through the handle and into an annular groove 14, formed in the stem, whereby the handle is swiveled upon the spindle or stem. In order that the webs 11 may not prevent the jaws from being closed together, the inner ends of the arms 6 of the jaws are provided with the slots or bifurcations 15 to receive the stem and the respective webs thereof.
In the operation of the device the handle 12 is held in one hand, and either of the other handles is turned, so as to feed or adjust the jaws longitudinally. in opposite directions upon the sleeve or body, in order that said a quick whirl to rapidly remove the nut, as
will be understood.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that all of the parts of the present device are compactly arranged for convenient operation and are positively connected to preclude loss, and the jaws are effectively guided in their adjustment by means of the angular sleeve or body.
What is claimed is- 1. A wrench ot' the character described, com prising an angular body, reversel y-screwthreaded rods swiveled to and projecting outwardly in opposite directions from the opposite ends of the body, handles provided at the outer ends of the rods, and opposite jaws, which have angular sockets slidably receiving the adjacent ends of the body, and are also provided with screw-threaded openings receiving the screw-threaded portions of the respective rods, whereby the jaws are adjustable for the entire length of the body.
2. A wrench of the class described, comprising an angular body or sleeve, having a cylindrical bore, a rod, having its intermediate portion loosely mounted within the bore, and its opposite outwardly-projecting ends being oppositely screw-threaded, opposite jaws, having angular sockets to fit the respective ends of the angular body, and also screw-threaded openings to fit the respective screw-threaded portions of the rod, and bandles provided at the opposite ends of the rod.

A wrench of the class described, comprising an angular body, having a cylindrical bore, a rod loosely mounted within the bore and projecting at opposite ends thereof, the ends of the rod beingoppositely screw-threaded, opposite jaws having angular sockets to fit the respective ends of the angular body,
'and also screw-threaded openings to receive j the respective screw-threaded portions of the rod, and a handle swiveled to the body intermediate ot' the jaws.
4:. A wrench of the class described-,comprising an angular body, having an intermediate laterallyprojecting handle swiveled thereto, rods projecting at opposite ends of the body, handles at the outer ends of the rods, and opposite jaws adjustable longitudinally in opposite directions upon the respective rods, and having angular sockets to fit the respective angular end portions of the body.
5. A wre'n'ch' of theclass described, comprising an angular body, having a cylindrical bore, a laterally-projecting and intermediate handle swiveled thereto, a rod, having a smooth intermediate portion mounted loosely within the bore of the body, and having its opposite end portions oppositely screw-threaded and projecting at opposite ends of the body,
handles fitted to each end of the rod, annular shoulders formed upon the rod and located at opposite ends of the body, and opposite substantially L-shaped jaws, each of the latter having one arm provided with an angular socket that is open at its inner end to receive the adjacent angular end of the body, the opposite end of the socket being closed by a wall, having. a screw-threaded opening to receive the respective screwthread'ed portion of the rod.
6. A wrench of the character described, comprising an angular elongated body, opposite rods projecting. longitudinally in opposite directions trom the respective ends of the body, handles at the outer ends of the rods, and opposite jaws having angular sockets slidably receiving the adjacent ends of the angular body, openings slidably receiving the respective rods, and also having longitudinall-y-adjustable connections with said rods 7. A wrench of the classvdeseribed, com-' prising a body, opposite outwardly-projecting feed-screws, which are swiveled to the body, opposite jaws slidably mounted upon the opposite end portions of the body and in operative connection with the respective feedscrews for adjustment in opposite directions, means for preventing rotation of the jaws during the adjustment thereof, and'a handle swiveled to the body.
