Abstract

284,106. Woodward, A. J. March 26, 1927. Shaft couplings; universal joints.-An adjustable shaft coupling, particularly for timing ignition magnetos, comprises a sleeve 11, Fig. 1, surrounding bosses 12, 13 respectively on the driven and driving shafts 14, 15, the boss 12 or each boss being secured to its shaft by a tapered connection to allow setting in any angular position. The sleeve coacts by an axial keyway 17 with a spline 16 on the boss 12 and by an inclined slot 19 with a stud or projection 18 on the boss 13. The sleeve 11 is actuated by a fork 20 from, say, the steering- wheel of a vehicle. In a modification, the sleeve 11, Fig. 7, surrounds the driven boss 12, on which it is axially slidable, and is surrounded by a drum 25 on the shaft 15, this drum carrying an inwardly-directed pin or helical spline or splines to engage a helical recess or recesses 27 in the sleeve 11. The coupling-parts may be of metal or, particularly in the form shown in Fig. 7, of fibre or rubber.
