Abstract

Universal joints.-In shaft couplings, for example of the kind applicable to automobile water pumps, magnetos, dynamos, &c. in which a toothed drum b<2> splined on one shaft b engages teeth d<4> on a hollow drum d to allow relative universal movement, the hollow drum is adapted to be moved axially into its secured position on the second shaft a, so that the shaft can be removed by lateral movement. The coned boss d<2> on the drum d bears upon a split conical sleeve c, upon which it is forced, to secure the parts d, c, a together, by a nut e screwed on the sleeve end. The sleeve has flats d<6> to receive a holding tool, and, to prevent relative rotation of the parts c, d, rivets g<3> are passed through radial slots in a plate g, and tongues g<1> on the plate engages recesses c<2> in the sleeve c. The slots provide for contraction of the sleeve during tightening. A further slot C<22> in the sleeve passes lubricant from an oil-hole d<3> to the inner sleeve end to prevent the tongues g' from jamming in their slots during disassembly. Two. couplings of the kind described may be used in series.
