Abstract

292,332. Craig, W. T. May 23, 1927. Shaft couplings; securing wheels on shafts.- In couplings for securing together two shafts or a wheel and a shaft, two double-tapered slotted sleeves coact with a central hub member and two removable end portions, threaded caps engaging the hub being provided for drawing the end portions towards the hub and so causing the sleeves to grip the shaft or shafts. The end portions and hub also engage by projections and recesses. The construction is such that the various joints are offset. Sleeves 14, Fig. 2, slit along one side, engage by their larger tapered ends 15 with the double-conical bora of a hub 9, and by their smaller tapered ends 18 with removable end portions 17 provided with flanges 19, so that they can be drawn by cap-nuts 21 towards the hub 9 to compress the sleeves 14 on the shafts A, B, which, as shown, may differ in size. The parts 9, 17 positively engage by dowel pins and recesses, Fig. 1 (not shown), but for heavier drives, two or more radial ribs 22 on the parts 17 engage recesses 23 in the hub 9, which has also keyways 24, Fig. 4, for keys 28 of alternate taper engaging keyways in the sleeve-ends 15. The sleeves 14 shown in Fig. 4 have slots 16 starting alternately from opposite ends and internal serrations running circumferentially, longitudinally, or both. The hub 9 may have central radial apertures for the insertion of wedges to facilitate expulsion of the sleeves 14. The part 9 may be the hub of a wheel to be secured to a shaft.
