Abstract

305,304. Coster, A. V., and Rennie, C. O. Nov. 18, 1927. Shaft and like couplings; universal couplings. - In flexible couplings for shafts &c., adapted to absorb strains due to rotational shocks, end play, and misalignment, initially. compressed springs bear on removable studs, lugs, &c. projecting from one or both coupling-discs, and, in order to damp them, are arranged in contact with the inner surfaces of integral or removable flanges on the discs, or with a ring inserted within the flanges. Springs A, Fig. 2, are held by washers H and split-pins I in contact with flanges F<1>, F<2> on the discs A, B, or with a ring K, Fig. 3, and abut on flats formed on studs E extending alternately from the discs. The springs are inserted through holes, Fig. 1 (not shown), and compressed by wedge means. Where there is considerable end play, the studs may have spherical or concave heads, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). In a modification, suitable for smaller couplings, the springs G Fig. 7, are compressed before the discs A, B are brought together, and contact with the surface of a groove L. into which studs E<1> on the disc B project. The studs have loose cylindrical plugs M, which press centrifugally on the surface of the groove and assist in damping the springs. Fig. 8 shows a form in which the springs G lying close to the shafts C, D and in contact with the surfaces of annular grooves S<1>, S<2> in the discs A, B, bear on heads p', p<2> and r<1>, r<2> integral respectively with the keys O<1>, O<2> and Q<1>, Q<2> for securing the discs to the shafts. The periphery of the coupling may be used as a brake surface or surfaces for hoists, cranes, or transmission gearing. The Provisional Specification describes forms in which the studs are replaced by integral lugs, and in which the springs lie between concentric flanges on the coupling discs.
