Shaft couplings; universal joints. -Shaft-coupling heads are provided with aligned dovetailed slots, which are loosely engaged by wedge-shaped blocks having a tendency to be thrust inwards by the transmitted load and outwards by centrifugal force, whereby the play is taken up and " chattering " eliminated. The flanges 19, 20, Figs. 1 and 2, of coupling heads 17, 18 are provided with a preferably odd number of slots 21 to receive loosely-fitting wedge blocks 22. To allow for want of shaf-alignment, the inner faces 23 of the blocks 22 are relieved into concave form. A divided lubricant casing 24, 25, which retains the blocks axially, may be rigid with the part 18 or bear freely thereon. In a modification, a lubricant casing 44, Fig. 6, and a modified coupling head 39 are channelled to receive packing 47, the casing having a filling-plug 51 and engaging a flange 48 on the other head 49, to which it is secured by screws 49. The wedge blocks 22, of which only three may be provided, have flat bases, the coupling-head slots being bevelled, as shown at 35, to accommodate misalignment. The blocks may have cushioning-pads of asbestos composition, leather, fibre, brass, &c., secured by screws 33 on their operative faces. The casing may be dispensed with, discs being then provided to retain the blocks axially. The alternative modifications described are applicable to either constructional form of the invention. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), comprises also cushioning-pads of " Raybestos." This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
