292,755. Royce, F. H. May 27, 1927. Steering-gear. - The hand-wheel shaft b of steering-gear which is not irreversible is provided with a friction damper comprising annular plates d having internal serrations engaging corresponding serrations b<1> on the shaft, a plate or platen e having external serrations engaging serrations in the fixed steering column a<1>, friction rings f between the plates d, e, and a coil spring g pressing the plates together. In the construction shown the plates abut against a nut c screwed on the shaft b, end the spring g is compressed by a nut j also screwed on the shaft and locked by a serrated washer and lock-nut k.
