Removing w a s t e ends of wires before winding.- The insufficiently insulated waste end of an enamelled wire a is removed before winding the fully enamelled wire on the spool b by winding it on to an auxiliary spool or the like c, severing the waste end, and simultaneously releasing the spool b to receive the fully enamelled wire. The wire a is initially fed through a hole in one of the flanges of the spool b and is severed at the required time by shears e, the shearing action serving to remove the brake d from the flange of the spool b. The free end of the wire may then be held while the spool b is rotated to wind thereon.
