Abstract

283,835. Norton, B. Nov. 9, 1927. Reciprocating picks.-A machine for breaking coal &c. is provided with two sets of picks which are lowered simultaneously to strike the coal carried on a conveyer, the first set consisting of rows spaced widely apart while those of the second set are closer together, and the distance between the sets, in the direction of movement of the conveyer, is greater than the distance between adjacent rows in the first set. As shown, the coal moves from right to left on a conveyer 1 intermittently operated by a silent pawl 5 and connection 7 from the main shaft 8. Resiliently-supported anvils 19 are provided as in Specification 276,943. The sets of picks 17, 18 are mounted on a lever 12 rocked about a pivot 13 by crank mechanism, and the distance between the sets is greater than that between the rows of the first set 17. In another form the pivot 13 is constrained to move horizontally as the lever rocks whereby a substantially vertical movement is given to the picks; or, the picks may be mounted on links forming part of a parallel motion for this purpose. In a further form the sets of picks are mounted on a cross head sliding in vertical guides and reciprocated from the main crank shaft.
