Rams 8, to press tobacco on to a take-up drum 2 and to rake excess tobacco from a rake-off drum 1, are pivotally connected to operating levers 4, 5, are arranged in front of and along the face of drum 1 and are provided on their working faces with pins 9. The levers, which may pivot freely on a shaft 3, impart to the rams a reciprocating motion such that adjacent rams move respectively towards and away from drum 2 and rollers or cams 28, which may be mounted on arms 27 keyed to a shaft 26 driven by a chain sprocket 24, engage and impart to the rams, during their stroke away from drum 2, a swinging motion, which may be against the action of springs 10, away from drum 1. The distance between the first row of the ram pins and the drum 1 may be adjusted by screws 11. Shaft 3 may be oscillated by a lever 22 and link 23 eccentrically connected to the sprocket, and actuating levers 15 are keyed to the shaft which, when the shaft rotates in one direction engages and raises the levers 4 and, when the shaft rotates in the opposite direction, allow the levers to move downwards under the weight of the rams. Levers 5 are operated in a similar manner to levers 4 by levers 18 keyed to a countershaft 17 which is oscillated by a gear segment 20 through a pinion 21 and by a gear segment 19 keyed to shaft 3. The stroke of levers 4, 5 may be adjusted by screws 16 and the pressure of the rams on drum 2 may be increased or decreased by spring means.
