328,125. Molins, W. E. May 2, 1929. Cigarette -making machines. - In a continuous-rod machine, means are provided for gripping the cigarette rod during the cutting operation. In the form shown, the ledger plate 1, comprising a channel 5 reciprocated by means of parallel links 2 connected to a crank 22, is fitted with a gripper 11 carried by a lever 12 pivoted at 13 and connected at 16 to a toggle link 15. The lower end 16 of the toggle link is connected to an adjustable member 17 on a link 18, one end of which is mounted on a fixed pivot 19<a>, the other end being connected by a link 21 to crank 22. As the ledger plate reciprocates, the toggle link 15 swings about its lower end and thus raises the end 14 of the gripper lever 12. Since the gripping action is only required when the ledger is moving to the left and cutting is taking place, the link 18 is arranged so as to lower the end 16 of the toggle link when the ledger is moving to the right on its return stroke. Guides 8 and 10 are fitted to the ledger.
