Cigarette-making machines.-A pair of shears 1, 2, for severing a continuous rod 3 of empty cigarette case, is actuated by the reciprocation of a member 8 in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the shears. The member 8 is U-shaped in plan, and carries a pair of rotatable rollers 9, 10, against which the shanks 5, 6, of the shears are pressed by springs 7. The member 8 is carried by a pair of rods 11, which slide in bearings 12, and are pressed towards the shears by a spring 14, which thus serves to maintain the shears normally open. The rods 11 are both connected to a hook-shaped member 17, which is connected to a hook 20 on a bell-crank lever 21 by a ring-like member 19. The, bell-crank lever 21 is oscillated by a cam 24 adjustably mounted on a shaft 25, and the oscillation is communicated through the ring 19, hook 17 and rods 11 to the member 8, which opens and closes the shears. The hook 17, rods 11, and the shears are mounted on an arm 28 which is oscillated about a pivot 29 by a crank and connecting rod (not shown) in such a manner that the shears will move at approximately the same velocity as the rod during the operation of cutting. The shears are pivoted on a sleeve 34 which is freely mounted between two collars on a rod 4, against one of which collars it is pressed by a helical spring (not shown). The shears are carried by a member 32, which may be angularly adjusted relatively to the arm 28 by slackening the nut of a bolt 33.
