In Fig. 6 is shown on an enlarged-scale, taken on. the line 6-6 of Fig. 3, an improved form of connection between the fluid-pressure pipe 33 and the head 34, this connection having a duct 68 in communication witha -throat 69, the Wall 10 of which is concaved to affordasmcoth flow of the blast into the head 34 (see Fig. 5).
What is claimed is: i
1. In a cigar wrapping mechanism of the class described, including a wrapper transfer for delivering a wrapper to the cigar wrapping devices, said transfer being provided with means for holding a wrapper in outspread condition there-- on, and also including a single rotary disk connected with gearing adapted to operate other mechanism in a cigar making machine said disk being provided with a tripping means, a flag pump adapted to apply'intermittently a blast effective to blow the flag end of eachwrapper sucessively from said transfer device; and means to control the operation of said flag pump, said controlling means comprising devices connecting said flag pump with said single rotary disk, said connecting devices including means adapted to set said flag pump for subsequent tripping by said tripping means on said disk.
2. In a cigar wrapping mechanism of the class described, including a wrapper transfer for deto the cigar wrapping devices, said transfer provided with means for holding a wrapper in outspread condition thereon, and also including a single rotor connected with gearing adapted to operate other mechanism in a cigar making machine; a flag pump blast effective to blow the flag end of each wrapper successively from said transfer device; and means to control the operation of said flag pump, said controlling said flag pump with said single rotor, said connecting devices including crank means adapted to set said flag pump and means on said rotor for tripping said flag pump.
3. A flag-pump-operating the features set forth in claim 2 in which provision is made of means to adjust the means for tripping said pump to vary the time when the flag pump blast is to be applied.
4. In a cigar wrapping mechanism of the class described, comprising a bunch rolling mechanism, a wrapper cutter mechanism, a suction wrapper-transfer mechanism whereby a wrapper is transferred under suction from said cutter mechanism nism, means for timed relation, a single rotor having a face perpendicular to its axis, gearing connecting said face of the rotor with said driving means, a suction mechanism adapted to apply suction effective to hold each wrapper in its turn during transfer, means to apply a blast intermittently to blow the flag end of each wrapper successively from the transfer to said bunch, and operating connections between said air blast mechanism and said rotor, said blast creating mechanism comprising a flag pump, and said rotor having said face connected to the flag pump by a crank device adapted to set said pump; a latch device adapted to hold the piston of the piunp in said mechanism having set position; means for tripping said latch when the flag pump blast is to be applied, and a cam means on the face of said rotor adapted to operate said tripping means.

A flag pump operating mechanism having the features claimed in claim 4 in which said flag pump comprises a cylinder provided with a top port, and which-has a piston rod fitted with a collar plate so disposed on said rod relatively to the co-acting portion of the crank means, and so disposed with relation to the stroke of the piston within the, cylinder, that the piston will always bottom against a cushion of residual air beyond said port in the top of the cyinder, and thus a certain amount of lost motion will be permitted to the crank arm relatively to the piston rod collar, such amount of lost motion between said co-acting parts being adequate to prevent injurious shocks therebetween regardless of adjustments of the latch tripping connections, and means to adjust the position of said cam means upon said face plate to vary the time of tripping said latch, and thus to determine when the flag pump blast is to be applied.
'7. A flag pump operating mechanism having the features claimed in claim 4 in which said flag pump comprises a cylinder provided with a top port, and which has a piston rod fitted with a collar plate so disposed on said rod relatively to the co-acting portion of the crank means, and so disposed with relation to the stroke of the piston within the cylinder, that the piston will always bottom against a cushion of residual air beyond said port in the top of the cylinder, and thus a certain amount of lost motion will be permitted to the crank arm relatively to the piston rod collar, such amount of lost motion between said co-acting parts being adequate to prevent injurious shocks therebetween regardless of adjustment of the latch tripping connections, and means to adjust the position of said cam-means upon said face plate to vary the time of tripping said latch, and thus to determine when the flag pump blast is to be applied, said cam means being formed with an arcuate slot and provided with fastening means passing through said slot into the face of said rotor.
8. In a suction head of the class described, for wrapper carriers, said head having a suction chamber, a detachable suction plate for carrying the wrapper, and a hollow neck by which said suction chamber is supported for transfer, the combination with said neck of means for automatically cutting off the suction when the plate is detached, said means including valve mechanism within said neck, means whereby the valve mechanism is normally incapacitated when the suction plate is attached, and means acting upon detachment of said plate to operate said valve mechanism to cut off said suction, said neck being detachable from said chamber, with said valve mechanism, as a unitary structure.
9. In a suction head of the class wrapper carriers, said head ,having chamber, a detachable suction plate for carrying the wrapper, and a hollow neck by which said suction chamber is supported for transfer, the combination with said neck of means for automatically cutting off the suction when the plate is detached, said means including valve mechamech-anism having 4 in which provithe means for time when the described, for a suction nism within said neck,'a spring pressed plunger mounted within said neck and projecting into position for engagement normally with said plate, whereby the valve mechanism is normally incapacitated when the suction plate is attached, and a spring acting upon detachment of said plate to bias said valve to cut off said suction, said neck being detachable from said chamber, with said valve mechanism, including said spring pressed plunger, as a unitary structure, for ready inspection, repair and replacement.
10. In a suction head of the class described, for wrapper carriers having a suction chamber, a detachable suction plate for carrying the wrapper, and a hollow neck by which said suction chamber is supported for transfer; the combination with said neck of means for automatically said neck, a sleeve mounted within said neck, a plunger mounted to slide in said sleeve and pro- J'ecting into position for engagement normally with said plate, whereby the valve mechanism is normally incapacitated when the suction plate is attached, and a spring mounted upon said plunger and acting upon detachment of said plate to bias said valve to out 01f said suction, said valve mechanism comprising a valve member and an arm extending from said valve member and connected pivotally to the upper end of said plunger.
11. A flag pump operating mechanism having the features claimed in claim 1 in which said single disk comprises a plate mounted upon the between said disk plate and piston rod comprising in combination a crank pin and a swinging crank on the face of said disk, a lever pivoted on said support and having an arm connected with the free end of said crank, said lever having a second arm with its free end adapted to be engaged with one of said collars in an intermediate position upon said piston rod, whereby said crank is adapted to set said piston rod outwardly against the bias of said spring; a lever pivoted on said supporting structure intermediate said flag pump and said face plate of the disk, one arm of said lever having formed therewith a latch member adapted to be engaged with a collar on said piston rod, to hold said piston rod in its extended set position, and another arm of said lever being extended across said face plate, and a cam means attached adjustably to said face plate, whereby upon rotation of said face plate said latch will be tripped at a predetermined time, variable at will, during each cycle of said cam plate.
12. In a suction head of the class described, for wrapper carriers, said head having a detachable hollow neck, a suction chamber mounted detachably on said neck, a suction plate mounted detachab'ly on said suction chamber for carrying the wrapper, and means carried directly by said neck and extending through said suction chamber for automatically cutting ofi the suction when the plate is detached, said means including a valve, and valve control mechanism within said neck.
