2,235,857 was issued on March 25, 1941, are*- cranked backwards for examination or adjustment of the parts.
In the prior operation of the tuck needle, the same slides forward from its rest position after the spring-pressed latch which holds it down isA automatically released during the rearward movement and contact of the needle therewith, and tilts up and enters a slot in the tuck end of the carrier whereon the wrapper is suctionally held. The needle then presses the tuck end of the latter down upon the bunch in the wrapperapplying device and holds it against the bunch during the first stages of the wrapper rolling operation. When this tilting latch is accidentally released manually, or otherwise as by cranking the machine backwards, the tuck needle will project upwardly into the path of the transversely moving carrier head, and if the needle is not held down manually, the head will strike the .same and may break it.
The present invention eliminates this condition. Instead of the latch heretofore used, a .cam may be provided to actuate a spring-ten- ;sioned double lever carrying a cam piece which supports the rear end of the needle and thus jhelds its forward end down, except for that brief :period of the cycle when the needle is actually required to perform its stripping action. At this time the carrier head is at rest directly, above the cigar bunch in the rolling device and has a slot for the entrance of the needle in registering position with the forward and upward path of the latter. In this manner, the needle is positively locked in its down-position during all portions of the cycle in which harm can come to it from the moving wrapper transfer.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specication and in which like char- Fig. l is a side elevation of the rear portion of a cigar rolling device, showing the improved mechanism for operating the tuck needle;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the cigar rolling device, seen from line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, showing the cam for operating the tuck needle.
Referring to Figs. 1 and, 2, the tuck needle Il) is carried by a holder II connected by a link I2 to an arm i3 aixed to a shaft I4 of a wrapper rolling unit I5 which may have any suitable construction such as disclosed in my co-pending application, S. N. 107,792, led October 27, 1936.
In this unit the needle I0 is guided by a bushing ES into the space between the rollers Il and I8 which support and rotate the cigar bunch C while a wrapper W is rolled onto the same. The top rollers I1 are intermittently moved apart to admit the bunch C delivered onto the bottom` rollers I8 by a suitable transfer from the bunch sha-per. After reclosing of the rollers I'I, the needle I0, by the mechanism hereinafter described, is permitted to tilt up and move forward into position i0 shown in dotted lines, thereby entering into a slot I9 in the head 20 of a carrier which has brought a wrapper W from a die on which it has been cut, the carrier head 20 at this moment being in the proper position over the rollers Il. In passing through slo't I9,'the needle I0 passes over the tuck end of the wrapper W which is held to the head 20 by suction. While the carrier 20 dwells in its delivery position, the needle IIIk then moves down, carrying the wrapper end, from which the suction has in the meantime been released, onto the tuck end of the cigar bunch C and holding it thereon for one or moreturns of the rollers I1 and I8 until it is secured in position bythe lap of the second turn, whereupon the needle moves back into starting position.
The attachment of the needle I0 to the holder 'Y H, and-that ofthe latter to the link l2 is disclosed in the co-pending application of S. Clausen, S. N. 267,232, filed April l1, 1939, on/which Patent No. 2,281,095 was issued on April 28, 1942.
The axial motion and the wrapper stripping ac-" tion of the needle I0 is effected b-y a cam lever 2l on shaft I4, this cam lever having a roller 22 held by a torsion spring 23 against the cam face of a barrel cam 2li mounted on the cam shaft 25 of the rolling unit, the spring 23 at one end being anchored to the frame of unit I5 and at the other to a collar 26 on shaft I4. As the raised portion 2'! of cam 24 enters under rollerv22, the
lever 2l is moved into position 2I, thereby turning arm I3 through an arc shown by arrow 28, into the position which corresponds with the forward position II of holder II.
The needle I3 is guided laterally Iby a slotted plate 29 adjustably attached to a bracket 30 on the frame of unit I and is supported in its horizontal position by a cam piece 3| affixed to a cam lever 32 having a roller 33 held against the oircumference of a raised circular cam track 34 on the rear face of cam 24 by a torsion spring 35, but the cam piece 3| is rapidly withdrawn to position 3l at the beginning of the forward motion of the needle toward position `I I to permit the needle to tilt upwardly. Forthis purpose the track 34 has a depression 3B at a predetermined position with respect to the raised portion of the cam 2l' on the forward face. The lever 32 is pivoted in a lug of bracket 30 by a pin 31 on the end of which is mounted a collar 38 in which is fastened one end of spring 35 whose other end is anchored in bracket 39. The spring 3S is enclosed by a tubular cover 39 attached to collar Y38. The hub of cam 24 is formed with integral jaws 4B by which it is clamped to a bushing ill held tight on cam shaft 25 by a plate 42 forced against the bushing by a screw 43 in the end of the shaft.
Just before the lever I3 is moved forward by the cam surface 21, the cam depression 36 en- `gagesthe roller 33. Thus the roller 33 is swung into position 33 by the spring 35, thereby moving the cam piece 3l from the position wherein it supports the rear end of the needle I0, into position 3I. Thus, when the support at the rear end of needle IIJ is removed during the forward movement of arm I3, the forward end of the needle tilts upwardly until the rear end comes to rest on a cross plate 44 adjustably attached to guide plate 29. Shortly afterward, in this tilted position, the needle during the continued forward movement of arm I3, passes into the slot I3 of wrapper carrier head 20, so that before re-engagement ofcam roller 33 with cam track 34, the down-stroke of needle II) due to the engagement,

What is claimed is:
I 1. In a cigar rolling device having a wrapper' carrier movable into wrapper applying position enter the slot in the wrapper carrier when at its forward position, a member for swinging said needle downwardly from said slot to pull down the tuck end of a wrapper from the wrapper carrier, mechanism for maintaining said needle in a position with its tip below the path of said carrier during the rearward movement of the needle, said mechanism including a cam lever supporting the rear end of said needle to maintain it in a substantially horizontal position, and a cam controlling said lever to permit said needle to tilt upwardly into position to enter said slot.
2. In a cigar rolling device having a wrapper carrier movable into and away from wrapper applying position and having a slot at its tuck end arranged to admit a tuck needle when the carrier is at wrapper-applying position, the combination with a member movable toward and from the wrapper-applying lposition of the oarrier, a tuck needle, means connecting said needle to said member for movement with the latter. means for maintaining said needle in an upwardly inclined position whereby the needle will be moved into said slot during the movement of said member toward said carrier, means for swinging said needle down from said slot to strip the tuck end of a wrapper from the carrier, a cam lever, a support connected to said cam lever, and a cam for operating said lever to .move said support into position to engage said needle and maintain it in a position with its tip below the path of said carrier during the movement of said member aw-ay from the wrapper-applying position of the carrier.
3. In a cigar rolling device having a wrappercarrier movable into wrapper-applying position and provided with a slot in its tuck end arranged to admit a tuck needle when the carrier is at wrapper-applying position, the combination with a member movable toward and away from the wrapper-applying position of the carrier, a tuck needle, mean connecting said needle to said member for movement with the latter, means for maintaining said needle in position to enter said slot as said member approaches the wrapperapplying position of thecarrier, means actuating said needle to strip :the tuck end of a wrapper from the Carrier, and mechanism moving in timed relation to the movement of said member into position to engage and maintain said needle in a position with its tip out of the path of the carrier while said member moves away from the wrapper-applying position of the carrier.
4. In a cigar rolling device having a Wrappercarrier movable into wrapper-applying position and provided with a slot in its tuck end arranged to admit a tuck needle when the carrier is at wrapper-applying position, the combination with a member movable toward and away from the wrapper-applying position of the carrier, a tuck needle movably connected to said member, means controlling the movement of said needle to cause it to enter said slot while the wrappercarrier is at wrapper-applying position and strip the tuck end of the wrapper from the carrier, a. device adapted to be moved into engagement with said needle and maintain it in a position Vwith its tip out of the path of the carrier during the movement of said member away from the wrapper-applying position of the carrier, and mechanism operating in timed relationship to the movement of said member to move said device into engagement with said needle to maintain it in a position with its tip out of the path of the carrier during the movement of said member away from the wrapper-applying position of the carrier.
5. In a cigar rolling device having a Wrapper carrier movable into wrapper-applying position and provided with a slot in its tuck end arranged to admit a tuck needle when the carrier is at wrapper-applying position, the combination with a cam lever, of a member connected to said lever for movement with the latter, said needle being movably connected to the member connected to said lever, means for maintaining said needle in an upwardly inclined position in which it will enter said slot as it approches the wrapper-applying position of the carrier, a stationary member arranged Vto engage and swing down the needle to strip the tuck end of the wrapper from the carrier, a rotating cam shaft, a pair of cams fastened to said shaft, one of said cams operating said lever to move it toward the wrapper-applying position of the carrier, and a member operated by the other of said cams and adapted to maintain the needle in a horizontal position during the rearward movement of said lever.

In a cigar rolling device having a wrapper carrier movable into wrapper-applying position and provided with a, slot in its tuck end arranged to admit a tuck needle when the carrier is at wrapper-applying position, the combination with a cam lever, of a member connected to said lever for movement with the latter, said needle being moyably connected to the member connected to said lever, means for maintaining said needle in an upwardly inclined position in which it will enter said slot as it approaches the Wrapper-applying position of the carrier, a stationary member arranged to engage and swing down the needle to strip the tuck end of the wrapper from the carrier, a rotating cam shaft, a pair of cams fastened to said shaft, one of said cams operating said lever to move it toward the wrapper-applying position of the carrier, and a member operated by the other of said cams and adapted to maintain the needle in a horizontal position during the rearward movement of said lever.
