Abstract

294,068. Norton, B. Jan. 12, 1928. Driving-gear for endless-chain conveyers with slat and lath carriers.-Relates to machines for breaking coal or other friable material of the kind comprising vertically reciprocated picks adapted to strike and break up the coal &c. as it is carried upon a conveyer 11. In order to lessen the proportion of fine coal produced, each element of the conveyer comprises a base plate 12 with a perforated carrier plate 14 spaced above it, so that any fine coal deposited directly on the conveyer from the delivery shoot 10, and any fine coal produced by the preliminary picks 5 when two sets of picks 5, 6 as shown are employed, fall through the holes 16 in the carrier plate on to the lower plates 12 before the coal &c. encounters the sizing picks 6. The carrier plate 14 is preferably inclined to the base plate 12, the distance between the plates being the greater at their forward edges, thus facilitating the ultimate discharge of the fine coal by gravity. Passage of the fine coal through the holes 16 is assisted by making the gap between the plates wider than the diameter of the holes 16 and also, if desired, by laterally tapping or jigging the plates 14 as they move between the two sets of picks 5, 6. In the machine shown, the reciprocating movement of the picks 5, 6 is obtained from a shaft' 7 by a connecting-rod 9 and levers 2, while the reciprocating movement of the conveyer is derived from a connecting-rod 21 and lever 19 carrying a silent pawl 20.
