Abstract

301,204. Norton, G. Dec. 2, 1927. Reciprocating picks.-In a machine for breaking coal of the type embodying primary and secondary picks which are moved up and down tu break coal carried by a conveyer belt passing under the picks, the conveyer belt is formed of a series of grids or open-meshed members 9 jointed or linked together, and a deflector plate 15 is disposed below the conveying face of the belt to prevent material falling on the return side thereof. The primary picks 5 and secondary picks 6 are mounted at opposite ends of a beam 3 pivoted at 4 and reciprocated by a connecting rod 2 through a crankshaft 1. The secondary picks 6 pass through a screen 8 which disengages coal from between the teeth of the picks. The conveyer belt passes over square or polygonal drums 12 and the movement is such that at the instant of the descent of the picks the belt is stationary and rests on girders 14. The coal is fed from a shoot 16 on to the belt, the coal broken by the primary picks, if of the requisite size, falling through orifices in the belt on to the deflector plate 15 and thence into a hopper 17, the remaining large lumps of coal being carried forward by the belt under the picks 6 where it is again broken and drops through the belt on to the deflector plate 15 from which it passes to the hopper.
