Sieves with compound motion.-A machine for sifting potters' slip &c. comprises a trough g carrying an inclined lawn or a series of inclined lawns h, h<1>, h<2> arranged in cascade. The trough is vibrated by an eccentric or a short-throw crank d at the lower end of the trough, and is suspended at its upper end by plate springs p from a fixed frame a. To avoid leakage, the, lawns are pressed together and on ledges g<3> of the trough g by wooden bars j of the form shown in Fig. 5, screws k holding the bars to the trough sides. The sifted slip passes to a box u beneath the lawns, the refuse passing off at the lower end of the trough. When one lawn only is used, the surface is stepped to break up the coarser material, and, in a modified construction, two troughs g with lawns in cascade are arranged oneabove the other.
