Abstract

283,654. Evans, E. S. Oct. 15, 1926. Axle structures.- The load carrying rear axle of a motor vehicle is mounted eccentrically to the stub axles of the rear road wheels and can rotate through a small arc relatively thereto so that the load acting through the springs can assist the torque imparted to the road wheels by the driving gear to enable. the wheels readily to surmount road obstructions. Each driving wheel hub 11 carries a spider 22 to which an internal gear 23 is riveted, the gear being driven by a pinion 28 on the differential half shaft 30. The stub axle 19 is mounted in a hub casing 33 which has an extension forming a tubular housing 41 surrounding the half shaft 30 and connected to a corresponding housing for the other half shaft by a bridge piece 42. Fig. 2. Surrounding the housings 41 is the axle casing 39 the ends ,of which are rotatably mounted on the ends of the housings 41 by means of flange joints 38. The springs 56 are mounted on the axle casing 39 and shackled at both ends to the frame. In operation. when a road wheel meets an obstruction, the wheels are momentarly retarded relatively to the chassis: The pinions 28 climb up the sides of the internal gears and the load, acting downwards through the springs and axle casing, pushes the pinions down again and the wheel surmounts the obstacle,.
