Abstract
283,647. Holmes, V. W. Oct. 15, 1926. Weight on axles, adjusting distribution of. - An internal-combustion engine locomotive or other rail motor vehicle, in which the engine shaft is a driving wheel axle or is coaxial therewith, is provided with means to transfer temporarily all or part of the weight normally carried by the driving wheel on to the carrying wheels so as to facilitate starting. The transference of weight may be effected mechanically, electrically or hydraulically. In the construction shown the axle-boxes A of one of the driving axles are provided with hydraulic cylinders B having pistons C through which the weight is normally transmitted from the frame by links H, springs E and buckles D. For normal running the cylinders are partly filled with oil under pressure so as to cause the driving axle to take its due proportion of the weight, but at starting the oil pressure is released and the driving-axle relieved of the weight A stop F limits the flexure of the springs when the cylinders are empty. The cylinders B are connected by pipes to an intensifying cylinder which has two floating pistons and in which the oil may be compressed by steam or compressed air. In a modification the cylinders B are normally empty, but are filled with pressure oil to relieve the driving-axle of weight.
