Fire-extinguishing by foam; sprinklers, automatic; sprinkling-apparatus, non-aictomatic.- A distribution-piping system for delivering foam to a number of points comprises a main pipe for the foam and a number of branch pipes, the latter being of relatively restricted diameters and of lengths such that the pressure at each outlet is substantially the same. The foam may be prepared by the method described in Specification 226,351, or in other known manner. As shown, an acid tank 2 and an alkali tank 1 three times as large are provided, the concentrations of the solutions and their supply pipes 4, 3 being equivalently proportioned. The pipes 3. 4 unite to mix the solutions at a junction 7 in which a trap may be provided to prevent one solution passing to the system in advance of the other. The pipes 3, 4 are controlled by cocks 5, 6 simultaneously operable. The foam passes to either of two main pipes 8, 9 of five inches diameter. From the pipe 8 branch three pipes 12, 13, 14. The pipe 12 is of four inches diameter until a point is reached where a short three inch branch 15 leads to two-and-a-half inch pipes 16, 17 terminating in nozzles A - - D arranged, in the example shown, in proximity to ships boilers 18, 19. The pipe 12 then continues with a three inch diameter until a three inch branch 20 leads to smaller pipes 21 - - 23 having nozzles E - - H. Finally the pipe 12, now of two-and-a-half inch diameter leads to a nozzle I. The pipe 13 leads to similarly dimensioned branches 26 - - 31 and spreaders J - - P and the pipe 14 to branches 33 - - 35 and spreaders Q - - T. The main pipe 9 supplies a similar system for the other half of the ship. The Provisional Specification describes also other suitable relative dimensions for the various main and branch pipes.
