Abstract

Fire-extinguishing by foam.-In a foam type fire-extinguishing apparatus of the kind in which concentrated acid and basic chemicals are separately dissolved in water, when required, to form separate solutions, the chemicals are stored in containers 13, 14 to which water is supplied by branches 24, 25 from a main 23, the valve 28 of which mav be automatically controlled by a thermal device 29. A third branch 26 supplies water to a container 21 for a foam-producing substance separate from the containers for the acid and basic chemicals. The solutions pass off by pipes 40, 41, 46 to a mixing chamber 44, the basic and foam-producing solutions being mixed before the chamber 44 is reached. The branch pipes 24, 25, 26 are restricted by apertured discs 35. 36, 38 to obtain the desired rate of flow and conical covers 32, 33 above the branches 24, 25 prevent the chemicals from working down the pipes, and may also be designed to give a swirling motion to the entering water. A looped-back inlet 34 serves a similar purpose in the container 21.
