Coils, apparatus for making.-A winding for a transformer, reactor, or like device comprises a number of disc coils separated by flexible unbroken rings of insulating material and formed of a continuous conductor or conductors arranged so that the turns in adjacent coils start at the outside and inside respectively. The winding is made on a former 4 rotated between the centres 5, 6 of a lathe which is provided with a bracket 11 carrying two groups of separating rings 7, 8, and with a bracket 17 carrying the conductor reel 15. Winding is commenced at the end of the former 4 remote from the rings 7, 8, the conductor being passed through the group rings 7 and over a guide pulley 13. The first disc coil is wound from the inside outwardly, and one of the rings from the group 8 is passed through the group 7 and along the former into position against the coil. A cross-over is then made on the outside of the ring. and the next disc coil is wound from the outside to the inside in any suitable manner, as for example that described in Specification 254,317, [Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.]. A ring from the group 7 is then brought into position against the coil; an inside cross-over is made, and winding from the inside to the outside is then proceeded with to form the next disc coil.
