282,205. M-O Valve Co., Ltd., Bartlett, A. C., and Ryde, J. W. Nov. 25. 1926. Vacuum tubes.-A cathode for a gas discharge tube, such as a biphase rectifier, consists of a metal containing nickel or iron coated with a compound of an alkaline earth metal such as barium nitrate, and subjected to heat treatment whereby a compound of alkaline earth metal and the metal of the electrode is formed which enables the running potential to be lower than that of the uncoated electrode. In the preferred process a nickel electrode is coated with moistened barium nitrate and dried. The coated electrode is heated in a vacuum furnace or in air to 750 C. for half-an-hour and then cooled. During the heating stage the nitrate reacts with nickel and changes to a reddish-brown colour. A coating which is black and crystalline, or leadgrey or white is unsuitable. The electrode may be exposed to air without adverse effect. A biphase rectifier has a single cathode and two anodes.
