Abstract
285,538. Robinson, E. Y., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. Nov. 9, 1926. Vacuum tubes.-Filament cathodes are, coated with oxide, or with one or more substances subsequently converted to oxides, after mounting the filament on its supports but before the other electrodes are associated with the pinch or seal or, if such is used, with a cathode framework such as is described in Specifications 285,536 and 285,537. A fine filament with a sheath of another metal applied, for example, by the Wollaston process may have the sheath removed, after mounting the filament on its supports or framework, by evaporation or solution : a silver sheath on a platinum-iridium filament may be dissolved in dilute nitric acid or removed by heating in a vacuum oven or by passing current through the filament in a vacuum. After removal of the sheath, a coating of oxide, carbonate or alkaline earth metal is applied, the metal being converted to oxide before or after mounting the framework on the foot or after sealing the electrodes into the envelope. Oxide coatings may be converted to carbonates before inserting into the valve. The electrolytic process described in Specification 221,851 may be used, a coating of metal or, if water is added to the electrolyte, of oxide being formed. The framework may be protected during coating by paraffin wax. The coating may alternatively be applied by repeated dipping in an aqueous solution of barium and strontium nitrate, the filament being heated by current in carbon dioxide after each dipping to form carbonates. In further modifications, coatings of a suspension or paint of barium or strontium carbonates in water or alcohol are applied and heated in carbon dioxide. Specifications 245,146, 245,147, 272,549, and 275,542 also are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes the removal of a thin metallic sheath after the oxide coating is applied, also coatings sprayed on to the filament.
