208,443. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Alloys Co.). March 1, 1923. Distilling zinc and other metals.- Metal dust, particu larly zinc dust, is made by vaporizing the metal and con densing the vapou: in the presence of a limited regulate( supply of air or other oxidizing agent. In the apparatus shown, zinc-bearing material, with or without a reducing-agent, is heated in a retort 2 the neck of which extends through the furnace wall into a condenser 5 the opposite side of which has an opening 8 covered with a bag 9 of permeable material such as flannel, the bag serving to admit a limited supply of air during the times when the pressure in the condenser is below atmospheric. The opening 8 is preferably opposite the neck of the retort to facilitate access to the retort. The condenser is of such size that the air entering through the opening 8 comes in contact with the vapour after it has cooled to some extent.
