Abstract
281,662. Ohle, H., and Neuscheller, J. Othmar-. Nov. 30, 1926, [Convention date]. Solidified spirit.-Ethyl alcohol is obtained in a solidified form or gel by adding to ethyl alcohol any of the alkali or alkali-earth metal salts of the sulphuric acid half esters of acetone derivatives of sugars and polyvalent alcohols such as diacetone-glucose, diacetone-galactose, a- and #- diacetone-fructose and acetone-glycerine. The potassium salt of a-diacetone-fructose sulphuric acid is particularly suitable and is stated to form a gel with ethyl alcohol when present to the extent of one or two per cent. The gel-forming substance alone or in solution is added to the boiling alcohol and on cooling forms a gel stable at ordinary temperatures, from which the alcohol may be extracted by pressure or heat. The jelly produced is colourless and transparent and the added substances are colourless, tasteless and non toxic so that the jelly is suitable for making beverages, food-stuffs, and medicinal and technical purposes.
