Abstract

The jelly-like substance containing a large quantity of alginate, which may be obtained from seaweed by extracting laminaria with a sodium carbonate solution containing ammonia and other salts, filtering, acidifying with a mixed nitric and hydrochloric acid to precipitate re-dissolving in ammonia solution and drying in transparent sheets, is converted into nitric or acetic esters by treatment with mixed sulphuric and nitric acids or with mixed sulphuric acid and acetic anhydride. Examples are given of the conversion of the gelatinous substance containing alginate obtained from brown alga into an "algin nitric ester" and an acetic ester, products which are comparable with nitro- and acetylcellulose, respectively; the former product is suitable for the manufacture of celluloid.
