Abstract
279,808. Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Roberts, W. van B.). Oct. 26, 1926, [Convention date]. Thermionic heterodyne receivers.-Undesired " image " signals in supersonic reception are eliminated by making the frequency difference between a given local oscillation and the desired signals sufficiently larger to throw the range of " image " frequencies well outside the normal range of broadcast frequencies. Preferably the beat frequency should be not less than, nor more than, twice the frequency of any desired signal. In order to increase the number of signal-frequencies coming within the tuning-range of the set, a second fixed-frequency heterodyne is introduced more closely related to the first beat note than the latter is to the desired signal. The system enables low-pass filter couplings to be used in place of an undesirably large number of selective circuits tuned to the desired signals. As shown in Fig 3, signals from a. loop aerial 11 are fed through a low-pass filter 12 to a detector valve 13, where they are combined with oscillations from a circuit 14 to form the primary beat note. After amplification at 15, a second heterodyne is introduced at 17 on the grid of the detector valve 16. The output is passed through an intermediate-frequency band filter 18, is amplified at 19, rectified at 20, and finally amplified in low-frequency form by the valve 21.
